Question:
In addition to being on the frontline of health care, how does a pharmacist support my health?
Answer from Express Scripts Canada Pharmacist, Todd Derendorf:
While pharmacists are responsible for dispensing prescription medications and providing patients with expert advice on their safe use, they also can play a vital role in the overall health of their patients.
Pharmacists are recognized as the medication management experts of someone’s health care team. They collaborate with patients, their families and other health care providers to improve the health of Canadians.
Pharmacists use their knowledge to provide advice and information about the utilization, interactions and side effects of the drugs they dispense.
In addition to dispensing prescription medication for patients, they also advise physicians and other health practitioners on the dosages, interactions, side effects and alternative drug therapies for a patient. Pharmacists also monitor the health and progress of those patients to help ensure that they are using their medications safely and effectively.
Depending on the province where they practice, pharmacists may also deliver a range of expanded services that might include prescribing, injection of medications, medication reviews, chronic disease management, immunization services and wellness programs.
The Pharmacists here at Express Scripts Canada take our role as frontline workers very seriously. We can help you avoid non-essential visits to the doctor by:
- recommending over-the-counter drugs that will be safe for you to use,
- knowing where to access important health information,
- educating our patients on disease prevention and wellness, and
- helping our patients manage multiple medications to ensure better health outcomes.
With a wide and varied scope of practice, today’s pharmacists are an essential part of your healthcare team. Their ultimate goal is always happier, healthier patients.
Until next time, this has been Ask the Pharmacist. I wish you good health.
