My mother lives with me and was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Any tips?

Parkinson’s is a very challenging diagnosis, not only for the patient, but for caregivers as well. The most important tools you’ll need are patience and understanding. Here are some suggestions:

Medication:

Medication can control Parkinson’s symptoms, but timing is critical. Giving a dose too early or too late can both lead to problems.

• Use a daily pillbox and give medications as close as possible to the times indicated by your doctor.
• Remember that medication will take at least 15 minutes to take effect.
• Avoid high-protein foods within 20 minutes of taking a medication dose. They may interfere with the medication.

Supporting your loved one:

As a caregiver, you want to help your loved one get the most out of life.

• For safety, keep your loved one’s living space as free of clutter as possible.
• Let them do as much as they can safely do by themselves. Be there as a backup.
• Make a note of when symptoms worsen or change so you can tell their doctor.

Remember that there will be good days and bad days, and that the symptoms are likely to get worse over time. Be aware of your loved one’s emotional state. Depression is common. Make sure they have professional help if needed.
And lastly, remember that you have needs too. Make time for yourself away from your loved one and do things you really enjoy. This will help keep you healthy and will make you a better caregiver.
