Question:

I have asthma and I use an inhaler. Allergy season makes it worse. Any suggestions?

Answer from Express Scripts Canada Pharmacist:

Allergy season, which is typically the spring, is called that because many people have tree pollen allergies. Other allergens like ragweed come later in the summer, and some, like mold and dust, can be present year round. Statistically, more people are hospitalized for asthma attacks in the early fall, when colds and flus act as a trigger.

  • If you find your asthma is worse in the spring, tree pollen might be a trigger for you. There are a lot of online sources that will help you identify when pollen counts are lowest. Try to stay indoors when pollen is high.
  • The important thing is to know what the triggers are for you, and to avoid them as much as possible. Remember that it’s not only allergens that can worsen your asthma. Cigarette smoke, pollution and quick changes in temperature or humidity can also trigger an attack.
  • Exercise can also be a trigger. If you have the space, you may want to exercise indoors when pollen is high.

Work with your doctor to get on the right combination of short and long-term medication to limit the frequency and severity of asthma attacks, and learn and avoid your asthma triggers.
